The research focus of the Chair of Building Structure at the University of Siegen is in the field of glass construction, particularly in the development of multifunctional glazing. Three exhibits at glasstec 2024 will showcase current results from various research projects.
The first new development from the Siegen research team is a laminated safety glass as security glazing of the highest resistance class P8B against manual attack. It consists of vacuum insulated glass, polycarbonate and thin glass. The vacuum insulated glass meets passive and active safety requirements and offers a slim and lightweight alternative to conventional multi-pane insulating glass. Additional thin glass panes guarantee passive safety with splitter bonding and post-breakage behaviour. Impact-resistant polycarbonate complements the cross-section for active security as burglar-resistant glazing.
The second exhibit dispenses with the internal polycarbonate panels thanks to a specially developed interlayer. The composite expands the range of applications for vacuum insulated glass in the construction industry to areas with safety-relevant requirements. The development also contributes to the optimisation of glazing in terms of thermal and sound insulation.
The third exhibit for glasstec 2024 is a smart laminated safety glass made of thin glass and polycarbonate. The switchability allows the incidence of light and energy transmission to be controlled and represents a thin and lightweight alternative to conventional laminated safety glass with comparable functions.
