Quality of life can be enhanced by improving the microclimate through increasing the proportion of green spaces. In cities and urban areas, this can often only be achieved by converting existing areas. Public transport stops are potentially very suitable for this.
In the greenLEAF project, Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Sciences and the companies EuroLam and NIRA, in cooperation with the Institute of Building Construction at TU Dresden, have designed a greened, glass bus stop. The aim was to explore different solutions for a bonded support structure and greenery. Low-maintenance, drought-resistant plant cultures and load-bearing glass structures were used in the project. In addition, compostable cultivation mats with maximum water storage were developed.
The project partners are presenting a mock-up at glasstec 2024. This illustrates the design and the selected solutions using an ensemble of realistic assemblies on a defined space that is 2.4 metres high, 0.9 metres deep and 2.8 metres wide. In addition to planted gabions, which green the verticals, there are plant tubs for greening the roof. The glass elements show the load-bearing structure with the bonded attachment.
