(More) Energy efficient through façades - A holistic view

The climate targets call for a decarbonization of the building sector. Previous approaches show that complexity is constantly increasing while user satisfaction is decreasing and the planned efficiency does not materialize. The question is: what contribution can façades make to a holistic approach?

Connecting history and future: Bayeux Media Library

The media library of Bayeux is a space without walls. Conceptually, the building captures traces of an ancient  tapestry in the design of the new façade building.

Changing Perspectives

The Rotterdam office Neutelings Riedijk Architects, will explain its view on the design of sustainable buildings using the example of the Gare Maritime in Brussels and other current projects. The Gare Maritime is an example of an award-winning sustainable transformation. This "city where it never rains" is the largest CLT (Cross Laminated Timer) project in Europe. Far-reaching sustainability measures have also been implemented at all other levels. As for the glass, the south facades on Picardstreet are covered with solar cells and dimmable glass panels have been installed to prevent overheating.

electric case

The new building Office for Environment and Energy (AUE) in Basel realizes the principles of sustainable construction with a sensible degree of technical innovation and is credibly integrated into the historic urban context. Its elements, their function and their interaction are clearly recognizable. The regular skeleton structure in wood-concrete hybrid construction allows for an economical and flexible spatial and structural system. A lightweight photovoltaic façade envelops the zero-energy building on all sides.

Combination of transparency and technology: The beauty of glass tiles

The studio ov architekti won the architectural competition for the new headquarters of Lasvit, one of the largest manufacturers of glass lighting artefacts in the Czech Republic. The design proposal involves two contemporary buildings between the two existing traditional Czech timber buildings. The black building is used for the presentation of samples, the white one as a flexible meeting place with a bar and direct access to the courtyard. The facade of the building consists of glass templates inspired by slate, one of the traditional roof coverings in North Bohemia. Each of the templates is atypical and completely custom made by Lasvit. The lecture is about the process from the design idea to its final realization.

unboxing cube berlin

cube berlin was inaugurated in February 2020 and has successively been taken in operation since the outbreak of COVID-19 during spring 2020. The lecture will explain the background for the design approach for cube berlin in terms of urban settings and explore the ideas and aims behind the concept such as the interaction with the surroundings and with by-passers, the relief and the kaleidoscopic reading of the facade. The design methodologies and some of the technical solutions will be explored in view of the overall aims and challenges by designing fully glazed facades i.e. the effect of the double skin façade structure and the particular selection of glass.

Vision. Architecture of RPBW with Glass

We will begin our journey in the Medienhafen in Düsseldorf with our FLOAT office building, an ensemble of fully glazed structures that seem to float above the piazza. From here, we will guide you through our architectural and technical solutions as part of a glass showcase. Using selected projects from the last 40 years, we will present RPBW's signature way of handling the unique properties and possibilities of expression of glass as a material down to the last detail.
